Abstract

This article intends to scrutinize the antagonism imposed by religion to democratic constitutionalism. Thus, from within the theoretical framework of liberalism, every argument center on the bibliographical investigation of the role occupied by religious authority and religious discourse in the political field and on the institutional sphere of the State. Autocracy is the first element confronted, as an entranceway to the matter of religion in the construction of a hegemonic rhetoric of domination. Subsequently, the theological field is sought for tools permitting the analysis of religion as a moral platform to the edification of absolute truths, which will resonate in the exercise of political power. The antagonism existent in the core of democracy between religion and constitutional liberalism is highlighted, as they present legitimate and opposing projects competing for regency and control over life. Thus, it enables the construction of a criticism to political liberalism, concluding for the possibility of religious coexistence within democratic Constitutions.
